The Solution for the Speed of Life!
I recently returned from a trip to New York, a city that I love, by the way. I love its energy, its audacity, and the fact that so many people have come together in such a relatively small space to do such creative things. That being said, there is also something very unique about the city. Almost everyone seems to be in a hurry… a big hurry.
Now, as a rule, I have no real problem with the excitement of wanting to get somewhere, creating a heightened sense of urgency with respect to how quickly we move. I just wonder if for some, this urgency has become their default position… as if their principle goal in life has become increasing its speed?
Of course, when we look at it from this perspective, it’s easy to see that there ought to be some higher purpose than just going faster. But what does this really look like? Do we have to start moving in slow motion to counterbalance this tendency to go to fast?
I don’t think so. In fact, I have created a concept that I call “The 2% Solution” that I would recommend to anyone wanting to deal with this tendency in a more purposeful manner. The 2% Solution basically suggests that we do everything just 2% slower. The nice thing about just slowing down 2% is that it doesn’t trigger the fear that we are going “too slow.” It simply takes that manic edge off of our walking, working, or driving, which allows us to do what we do and get where we are going from a more centered perspective.
Therefore, if you find yourself rushing from task to task, or place to place, I suggest that you give the 2% Solution a try, because if there is indeed more to life than just increasing its speed, don’t you want to find out what it is?
