"If there is one thing that is certain, it’s that we will always be dealing with uncertainty. The challenge, therefore, is to become certain about what we can know and control, which are the qualities and characteristics we are bringing to life."

Uncertainty!

In my seminars, one “trigger” that participants almost always bring up is the concept of uncertainty. Whether this is around finances, or business or our personal lives, this seems to be a concept that most people find stressful. Therefore, because I have been invited to speak in order to help them deal with stress, I give my participants a new way to look at this common trigger.

The perspective (that I call Life from the Top of the Mind) has to do with how the brain processes information, specifically, how the middle brain, or limbic system, tends to interpret uncertainty as dangerous. While this may have been true in our distant past, it is not necessary true today. In fact, few, if any of the situations we will deal with in the future are truly dangerous.

Therefore, I suggest that we reject this old, middle-brain interpretation and ask the question of whether fearing uncertainty is something that is serving us, or something we would recommend to those we love. If the answer is a resounding “No!,” then we must become certain about the aspects of life that we can control (who we are on a daily basis) and how this knowledge can give us a place to stand when the outside world becomes unknown.

In other words, we understand the neuroscience of when we find ourselves fearing something that we know doesn’t serve us to fear, and use this same, scientific perspective to become more certain of what to do instead.

This is what I teach, and, therefore, if you feel that learning to deal with uncertainty would be of value to your organization, I suggest that you contact me, because until we become certain about uncertainty, it will continue to minimize our ability to access our clarity, confidence, and creativity so necessary for success in today’s world.
